SciFi and Fantasy Art: Drinking the WindAccording to myth, the Arabian horse originated in the time of Abraham's son, Ishmael. While asleep, Ishmael suddenly woke as a huge twisting gust of wind swirled nearby. Thunder, rain and dust spewed forth until the wind was commanded to stop by the angel Gabriel. Upon hearing the angel, the furious wind coalesced into the magnificent stallion Kuhaylah, the first Arabian. It was said by the Bedouins that the spirited Kuhaylah "drank the wind" as he galloped across the desert. Me, a horse rider who has always enjoyed the free-spirit of an Arabian pure-bred can only agree that you have captured the fine nobility of such a breed superbly! The painting immediately brings to mind the four horses of the apocalypse (of course).... as I always think when I read Revelations 13, riders? what riders???.... the horses are capable all by themselves. Well rendered and coloured piece, I particularly like the diagonal composition, and what looks like an eye in the cloud mass urging the horses onward (as of course is the lightning/cracking of whips)... nothing but praise from me - maXine Donna Quinn replies: "Ah yes, it was such a chore looking through ref photo after ref photo of beautiful horses. ....As you can imagine. Thankyou very much for the comment Maxine!" | |
| 4 Apr 2007 | Barbara J. Wickham | It's been many, many years since I had to part with my little Arabian mare and I still miss her so much. She had a gait like silk and the personality of a mischievous wind spirit. Arabians are a magnificent breed and you did them a great honor with this beautiful piece. The turbulent blue sky is so fitting for this breed's nature and I love the highlights on the horse's musculature. Such beauty and strength! Donna Quinn replies: "I have to say, how is it that so many people I know on the net own, or have owned, horses? @_@ It's weird. Anyway, thankyou Barbara! The shine on the horses was by far the most fun part to do. I thought it would be a real pain but it was fine." | |

| 31 Jul 2007 | Robyn *Copperhead* Lee | Omg, this is fantastic! And I love the story behind it. You have a gift with acrylics. I've worked with them before, but I just can't seem to get the texture and depth right. Oh, well. I'm not going to give up, that's for sure! Plus, I've gotten into oils, so maybe that will help. How long did it take you to do this? The anatomy and such is wonderful! *gallops off to check out the rest of Donna's gallery* Donna Quinn replies: "I don't know how long it took- not that long, I would think. It's seven months old so I can't remember now. Thankyou very much for the comment Robyn, and I hope you enjoy your oil painting." | |
| 31 Jul 2007 | Krystal Crawford | Wow! How long did this take you to paint?! Donna Quinn replies: "I don't keep track of how long I work on things. An "average" time, I would expect. Cheers. " | |
