Plant or animal? Coconut Penguins are native to tropical Caribbean islands, feeding on seaweed and fish. Their natural buoyancy means that diving for fish is extremely difficult, and only shallow dives are possible. Often, they will bob about on the surface, picking off inquisitive fish with rapid darts of their beak.

What a intersting idea...and what an incredible painting!!! Great work! LOVE the little fish with his mouth open pobably thinking "Oh Crap"...

:-) Donna Quinn replies: "Thankyou very much for the comment; I'm sorry about my late reply."

I like the variety of fish here, and the shaggy look of the penguin. Nice work on the bubbles and lighting in the water, too!

:-) Donna Quinn replies: "Thankyou very much Joelle. I'm glad you liked the bubbls and water!"

I usually associtate penguins as being cute and comical but it's nice to see the fiercer side of these skillful underwater hunters. This beastie's face reminds me more of a raptor than a flightless aquatic bird. I'm sure it comes from having such a hard outer shell! I bet the coconut penguin doesn't have to worry a lick about sharks. *lol*

My favorite parts of this pic are the terrified reactions of the fish and the tiny bubbles caught in the "fur" of the bird. Wonderful textures and light quality in this one!

:-) Donna Quinn replies: "Thanks very much Barbara. 2 It was tricky to paint the bubbles around the penguin- I didn't know what to do but I 'winged' it (sorry, couldn't resist) and was pretty happy with the results. Cheers!"

Whoa... how wierd is that? I love the water and the fish... the colors are beautiful and the whole thing is very, er, realistic. The penguin is kinda wierd and scary but looks pretty tasty 12.

:-) Donna Quinn replies: "Thanks very much Gwenivere. 2 I'm glad it turned out a little weird, that's usually/ always a good thing. Kind regards, -Donna."

I have always wanted to do an underwater painting but I never could get up the nerve to do it. This is great. You got the right atmospheric perspective and those air bubble are very convincing.

:-) Donna Quinn replies: "Thanks Edward. I hope you do give underwater scenes a go. Best of luck with it."

Great, now I’m going to have every song I’ve heard involving coconuts stuck in my head for a while...There’s more of them than you think; go see "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" if you don’t think they exist. Good picture though.

:-) Donna Quinn replies: "Thanks for the comment Heidi; I hope you can view more food-themed artwork to get some other delightful songs stuck in your head instead.... 10"

If you crack one open is there milk inside.....?
heheh sorry.
Absolutely love your work. You have a stupendous sense of humor and quite whimsical paintings and descriptions. I admire your unique choice of subject matter. 2 Keep the crazy ideas coming!

:-) Donna Quinn replies: "That would be a cool idea Becca. Unfortunately I cannot take credit for the "coconut penguin" idea, as the character belongs to someone else."

I really like this painting because it really looks like they are underwater - not like other paintings that don’t look that realistic and they have a simple blue and some spread bubbles all over the background -
great job! and like you already know I LOVE you’re uniqeness!1

:-) Donna Quinn replies: "Thanks very much Agatha. I’m glad you thought it looked convincing."

Love the terrified looks on the fishies!

:-) Donna Quinn replies: "Thanks Tom; I swear, that was accidental! "
